Agribusiness: South Carolina’s fastest-growing industry

Table of Contents

The agriculture and forestry industries, together known as agribusiness, represent the largest economic sector in South Carolina, as well as the fastest-growing industries.

Why South Carolina? We have an amazing, ideal growing season with fertile soil and a milder climate. For farms in much of the U.S., the growing season ranges from three to four months. For approximately 10 percent of the nation, South Carolina included, our rural and urban farmers enjoy a six month-plus growing season. And, with relatively low-cost land, higher value crops are more easily grown here.

Agribusiness includes food processing, livestock and produce, wood, paper and forestry-related companies.

Our state holds nearly 25,000 farms! This accounts for nearly 250,000 jobs and $46 billion in annual economic impact.
